  • For the second year in a row, wide-eyed students at Immanuel Lutheran School released dozens of balloons into the bright, blue sky to mark the start of a new school year.
However, this year the grade school located on 11th Street in Rolla had one more thing to celebrate. The school is now accredited by the state.
"This is the first time we have received the Missouri Nonpublic School Accreditation," said principal Sammye Elliott. "We've received the National Lutheran School Accreditation several times since I've been here, but this is the first time we've received state recognition."
The school, which has been in the Rolla for 75 years, has 26 students enrolled this year in grades kindergarten through five.
Elliott noted that the process to receive both accreditations was a long and grueling one. It lasted for the better part of the 2013-14 school year.
Parents and teachers had to form a variety of committees that reviewed all aspects of the school.
"I am very proud of all those who helped out," Elliott said. "We had a hard working team."
Stephanie Waneka has a second-grader and a fourth-grader at Immanuel.
"This new accreditation is exciting because it means a lot to parents who have students here as well as those who are looking at schools. It's a way to compare schools."
In addition, the school is now offering an early childhood education program. The program is open to children from 6 weeks old through preschool age.
Elliott said she was pleased to report that the program already has 28 students enrolled.
