  • After a little more than two years as Rolla Public Library’s director, Cathy Smith has left the position, and a woman with local family ties has been named interim director.
Diana Watkins officially took over as head of the library temporarily Aug. 4. The library board hired Watkins as it looks for someone to fill the job permanently.
Smith’s last day as director was Aug. 7. She has accepted a teaching position at an area university.
Ralph Alexander, president of the library board, told the Daily News Wednesday that the board will meet Thursday to finalize its advertisement for the permanent library director position.
Alexander was not sure of a timeline for when a permanent director would be named, but said in the past, the process has taken about two to three months.
Watkins earned an undergraduate degree in English with a minor in technical writing from University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) and a master’s degree in library and information science from University of Missouri-Columbia.
Watkins worked in a Kansas City area library for 10 years.
Watkins has not previously worked at the Rolla library but lives and has worked at various places in the Rolla area, including a position at the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department.
Watkins’ mother is originally from St. James and her father, who served in the military and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, has family in Dent County.
Watkins complimented the library staff, noting that they are well-trained.
Smith officially took over as the library director June 4, 2012.
Prior to Smith, Dr. Robert L. Davis, served as interim library director since the beginning of 2012. Jeffrey Courouleau was the library director before Davis. Courouleau served in the position since July of 2010 and resigned in December of 2011.
