  • Rep. Tom Hurst will continue to represent the 62nd District in the Missouri House after defeating a challenge from Bruce Sassmann in Tuesday’s primary election.
    In the district which covers all or parts of Phelps, Cole, Crawford, Gasconade, Maries, Miller and Osage counties, Hurst received a total of 4,562 votes, or 67.645 percent.
    There were 2,182 votes cast for Sassmann in the district.
    Both were running on the Republican ticket. However, since no Democrats filed for the office, Hurst will run unopposed in the November general election.
    Hurst also won Phelps County, receiving 386 votes or 54.44 percent while Sassmann got 323 votes or 45.56 percent.
    “I was inspired by the results of yesterday's voting. I am humbled and honored to get to represent District 62 for two more years,” Hurst told the Daily News Wednesday. He thanked God, his family and supporters for his victory.
    “The outcome of the voting Tuesday tells me, as a legislator, what the voters think should and should not be done in this state,” he said. “Their participation in the voting gives us the answers to important questions regarding farming, gun law, road spending, privacy and the lottery. Voting does matter.”
    Hurst said by winning the primary, he believes his constituents want him to continue what he’s been doing in office.
    “They want me to continue to find ways to use taxpayer dollars more efficiently, find ways to keep regulation from becoming more burdensome, find ways to decrease regulations, reform and find abuses in how some agencies are run, continue to protect the unborn, continue to protect all of our rights, and continue to promote agriculture and education,” he said.
    Hurst said he will try to continue to do what he can to leave the state in better shape than when he was first elected to the House.
    A breakdown of the votes cast in the other counties in the 62nd District race is as follows:
    Cole: Sassmann, 79; Hurst, 338;
    Crawford: Sassmann, 35; Hurst, 70;
    Gasconade: Sassmann, 630; Hurst, 955;
    Maries: Sassmann, 518; Hurst, 1,092;
    Miller: Sassmann, 112; Hurst, 370;
    Osage: Sassmann, 485; Hurst, 1,351.
