  • The public hearing on Walmart’s request for rezoning to allow construction of a new supermarket on Forum Drive, just down the road from Forum Plaza, was put off until Aug. 18.
The council approved the delay at the request of Walmart’s engineering consultant who wanted to time to prepare additional responses to land-use concerns expressed at the Rolla Planning and Zoning Commission hearing.
Despite that delay, requested in a letter received Friday, Mayor Lou Magdits gave people who attended the meeting an opportunity to speak on the subject. Several did, but they will all likely be given an opportunity to speak again on Aug. 18.
None spoke in favor of the rezoning. Those who spoke told of their concerns about traffic, drainage and the effect on existing businesses.
On a related matter, the council also voted to set aside the replatting of the lot in McCutchen Acres that Walmart is seeking to buy.
