  • A third defendant has been sentenced in connection with the murder of a St. Robert woman in 2013.
Anthony B West, 50, of St. Louis, was sentenced to four years in prison for hindering prosecution of a murder that took place last summer in St. Robert.
On July 15, 2013, Laila D. Carpenter, 33, of St. Robert, was found shot to death outside Alpine Haus Motel & Apartments.
A few days after Carpenter's murder, West was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and first-degree assault.
Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Hillman said that West's charges were reduced due to to his cooperation with law enforcement and attorneys and evidence not matching up with previous charges.
“Mr. West fully cooperated with us by providing us with needed information which allowed us to get a life sentence on the shooter in the case, Charles Howard,” Hillman said. “We also became convinced based on the evidence, that Mr. West's involvement was simply driving to and from the scene.”
“This agreement was done with consent of the victim's family as they understood his cooperation was key to bringing the shooter to justice.”
In May, Charles D. Howard, 29,of St. Robert entered a plea of guilty to murder in the second degree and armed criminal action for his role in Carpenter's murder.
Judge Gregory Warren sentenced Howard to life in prison for the murder charge and 10 years on the armed criminal action charge. Howard will not be eligible for consideration for parole until 2043, according to Hillman.
Hillman stated that Howard was the primary suspect in this case and had previously admitted to shooting Carpenter with a 9mm handgun over a dispute between Howard, Carpenter and several other people.
Libby Charles, 43, of St. Robert, was sentenced to four years in prison for hindering prosecution for a felony in conjunction with this case in April.
Police documents state that the homicide occurred after an ongoing dispute between Howard's and Carpenter's family members, as well as Brian T. Haggard, 32, of St. Robert, who was also fired upon by suspects.
Carpenter was 33 at the time of her death and was the mother of three children.
