  • Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander had a captive audience of youngsters Tuesday morning at the Rolla Public Library during the library's regular weekly story time.
He was in town as part of his "Racing to Read" initiative which  encourages developing early childhood literacy.
In the spring of this year, Kander's office created a statewide grant program to give support to parents to read to their toddlers.
He told the Daily News that $300,00 was awarded to 29 library districts across the state. The Rolla Public Library received around $3,500.
"Reading to your young children helps them prepare for kindergarten. Studies show that the more words children hear at a very young age, the larger their vocabulary," said the 33-year-old Kansas City native.
According to Rolla Library Director Cathy Smith, the grant money will go toward purchasing books for the children's library programs and other related resources. "We are very grateful for his visit and his support for early childhood literacy," she said.
