  • The Phelps County Historical Society will host a special celebration for Edmund Ward Bishop's 194th birthday Monday, July 14, on the front lawn of the old courthouse located on Third Street.

  • The Phelps County Historical Society will host a special celebration for Edmund Ward Bishop's 194th birthday  Monday, July 14, on the front lawn of the old courthouse located on Third Street.
    The birthday party will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature entertainment by the Flint Holler bluegrass band.
    Refreshments will be available and a slideshow illustrating how Phelps County has changed or not changed over the past 50 years will be shown.
    Admission is free and all are invited.
    Bishop, the founder of Phelps County, was born in New York in 1820. He became a principal in a company that was building the southwest branch of the Pacific Railroad.
    Bishop became interested in land grants awarded to the railroad and engineered the creation of Phelps County in 1857.
    He designated what would become Rolla as the county seat.
