At Ozark Conference 7-on-7 Passing Camp.
The Rolla High School football team broke even during the third annual Ozark Conference 7-on-7 Passing Camp, held June 19 at Springfield Kickapoo High School.
In the previous two years Camdenton had dominated play. However, this year the tournament was won by upstart West Plains.
The West Plains Zizzers pulled out the tourney championship by beating Waynesville 19-18 on a late TD pass in the championship game.
Quarterback Sam Hall, who will be a junior, led the way for the Zizzers. West Plains had a 3-2 record while Hall was in the lineup as a sophomore last fall. However, a knee injury ended the rest of his campaign and West Plains lost its final five games.
West Plains has struggled mightily in recent years, losing 21 consecutive games at one point before ending that skid last year. Last season the Zizzers finished 3-7. However, the squad looks to have turned the corner in Steve Ary’s third year as head coach.
Leading the charge for the surprising Waynesville Tigers is cat-quick quarterback Varon Martinez, who will be a junior this season. Martinez will enter 2014 as one of the area’s most dangerous two-way QB threats. Waynesville finished 5-7 last season.
The Rolla Bulldogs finished 3-3 in this year’s tournament play. RHS defeated Kickapoo, Joplin and Camdenton while losing to Springfield Parkview, West Plains and Waynesville.
“Our kids played pretty well,” said RHS head coach Willie Howard. “There was a lot of wind that affected the passing game.
“I thought our kids really did a nice job covering passes and were in the right spots.”
The Bulldogs are set to hold the first week of their team camp next week.
The Rolla High and Junior High Football Camps will be held July 7-11 and July 14-18 at Lions Memorial Field. The camp is for kids entering grades 8-12.
Camp time is from 7:30-10 a.m. Cost is $40 per camper. Camp registration forms can be picked up in the Rolla High Activities Office or downloaded at www.rolla.k12.mo.us
After the last camp session the Bulldogs are scheduled to compete in the Sullivan Full-Contact Camp, to be held Friday, July 18, starting at 6 p.m. at Sullivan High School.
The Bulldogs’ preseason practice is to begin at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at Lions Memorial Field.
