  • St. James' Gilliam Gold Exchange burglarized July 1

  • Local business owner Shane Gilliam took his son fishing July 3, despite circumstance.
    "Even through it all, I'm still going to take him fishing," Gilliam said, who owns a local gold and pawn shop in St. James. The business was burglarized during the early morning hours July 1.
    Gilliam reported the crime to St. James Police shortly after arriving to work July 1.
    According to survelilance footage, Gilliam's 211 N. Jefferson St. store­front window was broken by a middle­aged white male using a hammer.
    "I've lost everything. I had no insurance on the items. It's just a total loss," he said. "Hopefully we will get the guy though."
    St. James Police Chief Ron Jones confirmed the break­in and the reported loss of coins and jewerly. No estimate to the value of the stolen items could be given.
    The investigation is on­going.
    "The department has individuals of interest that it is looking into," Jones said. "We are still analyzing the video footage."
    The crime occured around 2:40 a.m., according to surveillance footage.
