  • Sigel Camp No. 614, Department of Missouri, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, recently participated in ceremonies honoring cadets graduating from the ROTC programs at Missouri University of Science and Technology.
Sigel Camp No. 614 Commander Randal A. Burd Jr. attended two ROTC award ceremonies at Missouri S&T during this past quarter.
The first was for the Stonehenge Battalion of Army ROTC on May 7. Burd presented Cadet Melissa Jaime of Stonehenge Battalion with the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War ROTC Award.
Jaime served as cadet battalion commander for Stonehenge Battalion in the fall semester of 2013 and was a drill sergeant in the U.S. Army before becoming a cadet at Missouri S&T.
Burd also attended the award ceremony for Detachment 442 of Air Force ROTC at Missouri S&T May 10.
Cadet Stephanie M. Speer was presented with the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War ROTC Award by Burd at this ceremony.
Sigel Camp No. 614 also awarded the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War JROTC award to Cadet William Knoske of Army JROTC at Waynesville High School in Waynesville. His award was mailed to the school at the school’s request.
The Department of Missouri, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, also had its annual encampment June 7 at Comfort Suites in Rolla.
Burd and the camp’s Senior Vice Commander C. Scott Brown attended.
Burd, who recently finished a two-year term as secretary of the Department of Missouri, was elected senior vice commander of the Department of Missouri for the 2014-2015 administrative year.
Brown was reappointed department chaplain for another year as well.
Also at the department’s encampment, Sigel Camp received the James B. Eads Award for the 2013-2014 administrative year.
The Eads Award is a citation presented annually to one or more camps in the Department of Missouri who have distinguished themselves by both their camp’s participation at the department level and their level of activity in carrying out the aims of the order within their camp.
Sigel Camp No. 614 of Rolla was one of three camps to receive this citation at the 2014 encampment. The other two were Grant Camp No. 68 of St. Louis and Westport Camp No. 64 of Kansas City.
