  • The Armed Services YMCA will host the Field of Heroes at the Waynesville City Park in downtown Waynesville from Friday, July 25, to Sunday, July 27.
Three hundred 3-foot-by-5-foot flags on poles and 100 15-inch flags in combat boots will be arranged in precision rows on the field at the park as a way to honor heroes, including service members currently serving their country, veterans, fallen soldiers, firefighters, police officers, EMTs or others.
Flags will be on display from Friday, July 25, at 6 p.m. to Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m.
Boy Scouts will be on site to perform flag retirement ceremonies during the days. Guest speakers include Waynesville Mayor Luge Hardman and state Rep. Steve Lynch.
Participants will have the opportunity to sponsor a 3-foot-by-5-foot flag for $50 or a 15-inch boot flag for $25. Each flag or boot flag will bear the name, branch of service and dates of service of the honoree.
A commemorative card listing the date of the event as well as the honoree’s information will be provided to each person who sponsors a 3-foot-by-5-foot flag or 15-inch boot flag.
On the day of the event, the public will be allowed to walk through the Field of Heroes and spend some time amongst the flags. Photos will be permitted. All proper flag etiquette will be rendered, including having the field properly lit at night.
Flags may be ordered in advance by contacting the Armed Services YMCA at 573-329-4513 or ymca@centurylink.net. Payments may be made over the phone. Any remaining flags will be available for sponsorship during the weekend.
All proceeds will go to support programs for the families of service members stationed in Missouri.
The Armed Services YMCA would like to thank their guardian sponsors: Citizens Bank of Newburg in St. Robert and Phelps Regional Medical Center in Rolla.
