  • Several Rolla athletes definitely have something to cheer about after their recent competitions at the Universal Cheerleaders Association summer camp.
The Rolla High School and Junior High cheer programs traveled to Fontbonne University June 11-14 to attend the UCA Summer Camp.
After stepping off of the sidelines to showcase their cheer skills, three Rolla cheerleaders earned top honors. Freshman Lexi Turner, Juniors Gabrielle Whitesides and Drake Davis also were named All-American after competitions.
Turner earned a trip to Houston to perform at the Thanksgiving Day Parade, while Whitesides and Davis won eligibility to travel to London to perform at the New Year’s Day Parade.
“Becoming an All-American is one of the highest individual awards in cheerleading,” Varsity coach Amanda Almany explained. “Each year at UCA, NCA, USA, and NDA camps, thousands of cheerleaders and dancers from all over the country try out for All-American, and only less than 10 percent are chosen.”
Rachel Green, who co-coaches with Almany, agreed, “This is a huge honor!”
Rolla cheerleaders were not only successful in their individual performances, but as a team as well. The varsity cheer squad finished the competitions with three Superior ribbons, one Excellent ribbon, a Superior trophy for finishing as a Superior squad, first place in Band Dance competition, four spirit stick awards, and the camp’s Leadership Award.
The coaches explained that they were extremely proud of their team’s receiving this award, since this award is determined by their cheer counterparts. All squads at the camp vote to select the Leadership Award and only one squad was selected—the Rolla Varsity cheer squad.
Because of its top performances, the team received an invitation to perform at the Capitol One Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
“As coaches, we could not be more proud of both squads and all of their outstanding accomplishments,” said Green. Almany added, “Their hard work and dedication definitely paid off at camp this summer!  We are looking forward to a great year with this group!”
The Junior High Cheer squad also returned home with honors, which included three Excellent ribbons, second place in Game Day Competition, the Most Improved Award and four 4 Spirit Stick Awards.
The Rolla Cheer Program will be recognized soon by the Rolla School Board for its recent accomplishments as well.
