  • A Northwood R-4 School District bus was recovered Monday, and a Sullivan man is behind bars after being accused of stealing it.
Donald L. Francis has been charged with tampering with a motor vehicle in the first degree, a Class C felony. He was placed in the custody of the Dent County Sheriff’s Office on a $7,000 cash-only bond.
School staff noticed Monday morning that a school bus was missing from the parking lot.
Later Monday around 4 p.m. the Dent County Sheriff’s Office received information that the bus was located in the 400 block of Walls Road in St. Clair by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies made contact with Francis, who gave the keys to the bus to the deputies.
Francis was read his Miranda Rights, and Francis told deputies that he was visiting Salem for Father’s Day with his girlfriend, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies were told that while in Salem, Francis and his girlfriend started to fight and that his girlfriend left with his children and traveled to St. Clair, leaving Francis at his father’s residence in the 2700 block of North Highway.
The sheriff’s office stated that Francis admitted that he was intoxicated and began walking in search of a ride to St. Clair. Francis walked to the Northwood R-4 school and found a bus with the keys in it, the sheriff’s office stated.
Francis then told deputies that he started the bus and drove it to St. Clair.
According to the sheriff’s office, Francis stated that he blacked out and does not remember much except taking the bus and waking up in Stanton.
