  • The hands shot up with some of the most intriguing weather facts, including one confident 6-year-old who told KOMU-NBC 8 meteorologist Rosie Newberry that a tornado can carry 300 houses at one time.
    Newberry smiled.
Newberry spent a few hours Monday visiting with kindergartners through sixth-graders, talking about her job as a full-time weather reporter in Columbia, Missouri. The talk was part of the Rolla Public Library's summer reading program.
"I got into this because I thought it was something important to the community," she said." Most people watch the newscast for the weather."
Newberry recently finished earning her master's degree in atmospheric science at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and for the last few years has been the weather reporter for the five, six, nine and 10 o'clock newscasts.
When she is not putting her forecasts together, she is doing a myriad of other weather-related work such as radio spots, designing her graphics and producing promos.
She noted that in college there were two types of students in the weather department — those who really liked the science behind it and those who liked the broadcast end of it.
"I was struck by how few wanted to be on the news due to the fact that weather is so often associated with the news," Newberry said. "Most of my classmates wanted to go to work for the National Weather Service."
As she went through her PowerPoint presentation to the 35 students who were part of the program, she told them that Missouri is a good place for her because it gets four distinct seasons.
And for those children who thought that meteorologists study meteorites, she was there to set the record straight.
"That's a meteoriticist," she said. "I just learned that one myself."
