  • In conjunction with Newburg Day this Saturday, June 14, Burns Army Surplus is hosting General Jimmy Doolittle Victory Day.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $2 for adults and children under age 10 can get in for free. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Missouri Veterans Home in St James.
Over 40 re-enactors will be on hand demonstrating a World War II encampment on the Army surplus grounds located at 363 Doolittle Outer Road.
"We will be having some weapons' demonstrations, tents set up and a small skirmish scheduled," noted Jeff Rigsby, manager of Burns Army Surplus.
In 1946, famed World War II bomber Jimmy Doolittle came to speak at the town's dedication as his namesake.
"History will come alive this weekend. We will have military vehicles on display and a number of guest speakers," added Rigsby.
Among the speakers will be Ben Fainer, a Holocaust survivor; St. Louis living historian Richard Ford who will speak on the African-American World War II combat experience; and Lou Baczewski who will speak on his experience of the Honor Flight program. Baczewski took his grandfather, a veteran, on an Honor Flight.
"It's our hope that lots of good stories are told this weekend," Rigsby said.
A shuttle bus will be running back and forth between this event and Newburg Day festivities.
