  • Nancy Lentz, of Rolla, has been named the winner of a contest that encouraged Rolla residents to shop local throughout the month of May.
Lentz was selected from more than 300 registrants who entered the contest hosted by the Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce. She won the grand prize of $1,000.
    The contest worked as follows:
For every five Rolla businesses that a Phelps County resident shopped, that individual was entered into the $1,000 giveaway one time. People could enter as many times as they liked, but they had to have five receipts for each entry from five different businesses.
“Shopping locally is important to the quality of life of our community and our residents,” said Stevie Kearse, executive director of the Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce. “When we shop our own community, we are both sustaining our local businesses as well as helping the area grow and prosper.
“Our local purchases grow our local tax base which is put back into our community through city/county services, business sustainability, business growth/expansion and through employment of a strong workforce,” Kearse said. “When we shop local we grow our community. When we shop out of town or online, we are growing someone else’s community.”
During this promotion, the chamber received 320 entries that represented 175 businesses in the Rolla community.
Contest entries totaled more than $70,000 in purchases with an estimated sales tax of more than $4,000.
The Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce will continue to hold giveaways such as this to both reward the community for shopping local and educate everyone on the importance of the benefits when people make the decision to purchase goods and services locally.
