  • The yard of Marissa and James Drewniak’s home at 829 Oak Knoll Drive has been named the Yard of the Month for June by the Rolla Floriculture Club.
The front yard is on the north side of the house and is shaded or partially shaded most of the day, so shade perennials abound.
The yard has several bedding areas islanded in the thick green lawn. Each bedding area contains several tall oak trees and leafy dogwoods beneath.
The purple globe allium are giving way to red beebalm and the delicate pink spirea blossoms will soon fade as the nearby alstroemeria start to show their colors.
The May splashes of color from peonies, Siberian irises and azaleas in reds, magentas and purples are giving way to early summer color.
The shade beds are filled with abundant hostas of different shades of green with delicate astilbe blooms dancing above.
Additional color comes from the many different leaf shades of heuchera plants in lime green, peach and auburn. Spiderwort in purple and white keep color until the daylilies start to bloom later in the month along with the blue and pink balls of the hydrangea.
Hardy geraniums provide an undergrowth of pink and purple. The delicate lavender of catmint complements the deep purple of salvia along the sunny edges of the center bed. The clematis twining up the light post is ready to burst into bloom of delicate pink flowers.
Other plants that have already passed their annual prime include Hellebores, trillium, bleeding hearts, snow drops and masses of early tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.
