  • A Thursday morning high-speed car chase on Highway 72 in Rolla ended with two men facing drug-related charges when an operational methamphetamine laboratory was found in the back of the vehicle.
The two suspects have been identified as 36-year-old  Daniel L. Benton, of Union, and Mitchel L. Peck, 37, of Kansas City, Missouri.
Benton faces four charges: first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle, a Class C felony; felony resisting arrest, a Class D felony; first-degree drug trafficking, a Class A felony; and possession of a controlled substance except for 35 grams or less of marijuana, a Class C felony.
Peck has been charged with first-degree drug trafficking.
At approximately 7:30 a.m. the Rolla Police Department learned of a vehicle that had been reported stolen from the MotoMart convenience store located at 200 South Highway 63 in Rolla.
According to the victim, he left his keys in his car as he went into the store to buy a hot dog. When he came out, his car was gone.
The victim immediately called 911 and described the suspect and the stolen vehicle.
Approximately 10 minutes later, the vehicle was spotted by a Rolla police officer near the intersection of Highway 72 and Rolla Street.
When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the vehicle failed to stop and accelerated to a high rate of speed, traveling east on Highway 72.
Officers pursued the vehicle until it pulled into a driveway of a residence in the 13000 block of Highway 72 east of the city limits.
Two individuals got out of the car and attempted to flee the scene on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, both individuals were apprehended.
During the course of the follow-up investigation, it was determined that the suspects had an active meth lab operating in the back of the vehicle, and that they had been producing meth inside the Rustic Motel in the 800 block of South Highway 63 over the last three days.
Benton and Peck were placed in the Phelps County Jail.
Agencies assisting the Rolla Police Department in this investigation were the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and the South Central Drug Task Force.
