  • In an early matchup between what could end up being the district tournament championship contestants, the Rolla High School girls’ soccer team was upended by Jefferson City Helias 1-0 Thursday in a make-up game between state-ranked foes at Lions Memorial Field.
It was the regular-season finale for both Rolla, now 19-4, and the Helias Lady Crusaders, now 15-8-1. Rolla is ranked No. 4 in the Missouri Class 2 state poll while Helias is ranked No. 5. Rolla ends the regular season with a 4-3 record against ranked opponents.
For next week’s Missouri Class 2 District 10 Tournament Helias - the defending district champion - is seeded No. 1, Bolivar (19-2) No. 2, Rolla No. 3, Columbia Battle (5-15-1) No. 4 and Marshfield (5-18) No. 5. The district tourney will be held in Bolivar.
In the district first-round game Monday Battle plays Marshfield at 5 p.m.
In semifinal games on Tuesday Helias is scheduled to play the Battle-Marshfield winner at 4 p.m. with Rolla taking on host Bolivar at 6 p.m.
The district championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday.
Helias finished runner-up in last year’s Missouri Class 2 State Tournament.
Thursday’s game was a tight, scoreless tussle until the final minutes of play.
The Lady Crusaders struck for the lone goal with 6:31 remaining and outshot the Lady Bulldogs 5-4.
“Helias is a strong team,” said RHS head coach Mike Howard. “They are big and physical; a tough matchup for anybody. We now have to set our sights on a Bolivar team that, looking at the seeds, all of the other coaches in the district think will beat us.
“We jump right into it with this district; it’s either the toughest district in the state or the second. That district with Ladue, MICDS and Incarnate is brutal also. All we can do is go where the state sends us. We will be prepared to play; everyone gets 80 minutes to try and advance. We’ll see what happens.”
Helias also won the junior varsity game 4-2. Caroline Victor had a goal and assist and Sierra LeClaire scored the other goal for the Rolla jayvee squad, which ends the campaign 11-4.
