  • A team of students from Missouri University of Science and Technology will travel to Brooklyn, Mich., next week to demonstrate its Formula One-style race car at the Formula SAE-Michigan competition.
The competition, sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers-International, will be held Wednesday, May 14, through Saturday, May 17, at the Michigan International Speedway.
Missouri S&T’s Formula SAE team will race its car against approximately 120 other collegiate teams from around the world. The competition requires student teams to design, build and drive the vehicles.
The competition is divided into two sections. Static events include a business presentation of the car, the team’s budget and the engineering principles behind the car’s design. Dynamic events include a one-lap autocross event, a skidpad event in the shape of a figure-eight, an acceleration and braking test and a 22-lap endurance race.
During the races, Missouri S&T’s car can reach up to 75 miles per hour. Each race is timed to rank teams. None of the events are head-to-head races.
This year’s car has a four-cylinder engine and a custom aerodynamics package that causes a large amount of downforce, to help the car grip better while cornering. It has undergone eight hours of wind tunnel testing and its diffuser and rear spoiler are made of carbon fiber.
Dr. Hank Pernicka, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri S&T, is the team’s faculty adviser. For more information about the event, visit students.sae.org.
Among the team members are the following local students — Jason Martin, a junior in mechanical engineering and Jon Silberhorn, a senior in mechanical engineering, both of Rolla.
