How many years have you been a nurse: Almost three.
Why did you decide to become a nurse? After completing my business degree, I learned quickly that it just wasn’t for me. It didn’t make me happy. I love people and there was always a part of me that wanted to pursue nursing. I think that is when I finally decided to give it a try. Looking back now, I don’t know why I didn’t start in nursing to begin with. I love it!
Were/are you inspired by any other nurses? Absolutely! My earliest inspiration would definitely be my Aunt Val. She is a labor and delivery nurse and was actually the nurse who delivered me when I was born. I have always thought there was something so special about what she does. I chose a different field of nursing, however. I work in a family medicine clinic and am still often inspired by many nurses I encounter; those I work with and mentor and those who have cared for me and my family. I love gaining wisdom from more experienced nurses and learning new information from new nurses coming into the field.
What is the best part of your job? So, we ordered Chinese take-out today and my fortune cookie read, “you will bring sunshine into someone’s life.” I think this is so fitting. The absolute best part of my job is being there for my patients to help them feel better when they are not well. It is truly an honor to be a part of my patients’ care and their lives, both professionally and personally.
What is something people may not know about your job? Nursing is not just about being kind and caring. There is a lot of science and math to it too.
What advice would you give to people who may be considering going into nursing? There is always a demand for a nurse who can have an open heart, an open mind and a sense of humor. If those are qualities you possess and you have the interest, absolutely pursue it. I wish I had started sooner.
