  • The Rolla Area Chamber of Commerce Small Business Committee is celebrating Small Business Week, which will be May 12-16, with several events planned.
Every year since 1963, the president of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.
More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.
On Tuesday, May 13, there will be a body language seminar presented by Constance Hoffman, of Social and Business Graces, from 8:30-10 a.m. at The Centre. The cost is $10, and people should R.S.V.P. by emailing carolyn@rollachamber.org or calling 573-364-3577.
On Wednesday, May 14, there will be a small industry tour and tasting at St. James Winery, 540 State Route B, St James. Attendees should meet in the Tasting Room at 4 p.m. People planning to attend should let the Chamber know by emailing carolyn@rollachamber.org or calling 573-364-3577.
Then, on Thursday, May 15, a Lunch-N-Learn will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the council chambers at Rolla City Hall, 901 N. Elm St.
The topic of discussion will be best practices for businesses, including Refinance 101, releasing collateral for cash, building communication with banks, other ways to save on business expenses and cross-training staff.
Attendees should bring their own lunch. No reservations are required.
The week will end with a cash mob on Friday, May 16, at Dairy Queen, 1303 North Highway 63 in Rolla, where people are invited to stop by from 3-5 p.m. and purchase a treat.
According to the Chamber, this will be an ongoing effort by the committee to showcase and recognize various retail businesses in the community.
Additionally, shoppers in Rolla are reminded to keep their receipts during the month of May, as they can win $1,000 for supporting local businesses. Registration forms are available at the Rolla chamber office, 1311 Kingshighway, Rolla.
