  • The Community Partnership's Young Parents program invites area residents to a public conversation about the impact of teen pregnancy on communities at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, in the Multipurpose Room of the Phelps County Courthouse.
The event is called “#BeTheException” and will last about an hour. May 7 is also National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy in the U.S.
Sammie Goodson, Young Parents coordinator and organizer of the event, explained the reason for this meeting, and why the public needs to understand how teen pregnancy can impact an entire community.
"The facts about teen pregnancy show that a community is impacted on many levels," she said. "Economically, educationally, and in other ways. This conversation is open to the public, and it is not going to focus on morality or politics. This is just a way to raise awareness, and to encourage young people, parents, educators, health care providers, law enforcement and the general population to help our area be the exception to the statistics."
Goodson said that this topic is not one that is addressed publicly often in our area, but that residents may be surprised to hear some of the facts surrounding this issue.
"It's just not something people want to talk about," she said, "but there are some very serious social problems connected with teen pregnancy, including poverty - especially child poverty - child abuse and neglect, father-absence, low birth weight, school failure and poor preparation for the workforce.
“We want to raise awareness, and work toward making our communities the exception to the facts,” Goodson said. “We urge anyone working with youth in any way to attend this meeting. Let's talk about this.”
