  • A man is behind bars after law enforcement officers responded to a report of a bomb threat in St. James, but found no explosive devices — instead they located only empty canisters.
The subject's name is not being released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
According to the St. James police, at approximately 9:30 a.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Grover Street in St. James for a report of a bomb threat.
When officers arrived, they discovered that an employee located a note posted on one of the tenant's rooms which indicated a bomb was in the room.
Visible from the room’s window were two gas cans strung together with wires running out. Officers evacuated the premises and established a perimeter.
The St. James Police Department contacted the Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad and the Rolla Police Department Special Response Team to assist.
The patrol's bomb squad deployed their bomb service robot, which breached the window and removed the gas canisters. The canisters were found to be empty and no explosive devices were located, according to police.
The Rolla Special Response Team took the suspect into custody and then turned him over to the St. James police.
The suspect was then transported to the Phelps County Jail pending a warrant application.
The Phelps County Sheriff's Department and St. James Fire Protection District assisted St. James and Rolla police and the highway patrol.
