  • The Missouri University of Science and Technology Chamber and University choirs, directed by Lorie Francis, a lecturer in arts, languages and philosophy, along with the Rolla Choral Arts Society, the Rolla High School choirs and the 399th Army Band from Fort Leonard Wood for two free performances of “Carmina Burana” Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27.
The first performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26. The second performance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27. Both performances will be held in Leach Theatre of Castleman Hall, located at 10th and Main streets in Rolla.
Jeff Sandquist, music teacher at RHS, will conduct the ensemble of more than 200 musicians.
The ensemble will perform Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” a cantata based on 24 poems from the medieval collection of the same name.
“Carmina Burana,” Latin for “Songs from Beuern,” is a manuscript of 254 mostly satirical medieval poems. The collection was the inspiration for Orff’s 1935 composition.
Melissa Baughman, a Ph.D. candidate in music education at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU), and MU alumni Darrell Jordan and Nathan Ward will perform vocal solos.
The performance is free, but tickets are required for admission. Tickets are available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Leach Theatre box office located in the vestibule of the main entrance of Castleman Hall, facing 10th Street.
Tickets are also available at Kent Jewelry, 907 N. Pine St. in Rolla.
The Rolla Choral Arts Society is supported in part by Phelps County Bank, The Public House Brewing Co. and the Missouri Arts Council.
