  • Dusty Harrill had a little bout of wildness on Thursday against the Rolla High School baseball team.
However, when the Bulldogs couldn’t take advantage of the few chances they had, the West Plains pitcher took care of everything else.
Harrill, a senior left-hander, tossed a one-hit shutout on Thursday, going the distance to lift the West Plains Zizzers to a 2-0 Ozark Conference decision over RHS on FCNB Field at the Bray Sports Complex.
Rolla falls to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Harrill, the Ozark Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2013, allowed just a lone single to Rolla junior Collin Nash while striking out nine. He did walk six Bulldogs, but RHS wasn’t able score.
“I was pleased with the effort,” said RHS head coach Karl Odenwald. “Overall we played well. We just didn’t take advantage of opportunities. Three times we had runners at third base and couldn’t get anyone home. (Harrill is) tough to hit, but he did give us six walks.”
Harrill’s gem wasted a strong pitching effort by Rolla junior right-hander Mason Pickrell. Pickrell allowed six hits and three walks over seven innings.
West Plains scored single runs in the top of the first and third innings.
“They had two, two-out hits with runners in scoring position,” Odenwald said. “That was the difference in the game.
“Mason did a nice job. You give up two runs in a high school game you expect to win.”
West Plains also won the junior varsity game 5-1. Sophomore Sean Young was the losing pitcher for the Rolla jayvee squad.
The Bulldogs are slated to play at Camdenton on Tuesday in league play and a non-conference game Wednesday on the road against Jefferson City High School.
