  •  The St. James annual community cleanup week will begin Monday, April 21, and will run through Friday, April 25.
This annual community service serves as a week-long spring cleaning event that gives residents an opportunity to "put out as much of what they wanted discarded" on the curb at no additional cost, said St. James Mayor Dennis Wilson.
This has been a free public service for nearly 10 years.
"Unless it's something we cannot take to the landfill or recycle, we will pick up whatever is put out," the mayor said. "We will make these pickups by arrangement at other times of the year, but there will be a charge for it."
This is a joint effort between the St. James streets and sanitation departments, however each ward’s normal collection schedule will not change.
Wilson said with warmer weather moving in, this is the best time of year to offer the service, which is limited to residential customers only.
"All too often people just dump stuff," he said. "This helps prevent that because it gives residents an outlet – they don’t have to pay for it and it provides a benefit to the city."
Residents are asked not to place electronics, household or outdoor chemicals, and biodegradable waste with their collection items. Disposal of these items is done through special collections by contacting the city at 573-265-7011.
Collections for various household items are also held throughout the year through the Meramec Regional Planning Commission. Contact MRPC for more information at 573-265-2993 or visit www.meramecregion.org/
