  • It wasn’t a win.
But it was certainly a better performance than over the weekend against Springfield Kickapoo for the Rolla High School baseball team.
The Bulldogs stayed winless in Ozark Conference play on Tuesday, falling to the Kickapoo Chiefs 6-1. The game had been scheduled for Rolla but due to field conditions was moved to Springfield.
Rolla falls to 8-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Over the weekend the Bulldogs were belted by Kickapoo 16-5 in the Springfield Red & Blue Classic.
On Tuesday Rolla matched Kickapoo in hits, with seven each. However, the Chiefs took advantage of three RHS errors to help them pull out to an early lead.
Kickapoo scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, added one more in the third and three in the fourth.
Rolla’s lone run came in the fourth, when senior Bryan Peach walked and later scored on junior Jake Stephens’ RBI single.
Junior right-hander Mason Pickrell went the distance on the mound for Rolla to get tagged with the loss.
Junior Collin Nash and senior Matthew Claypool each had two hits for RHS while junior Andy Satulla, senior Seth Stevens and Stephens all had one.
“Our overall approach at the plate was pretty good,” said RHS head coach Karl Odenwald. “We had four or five hit right on the screws right at somebody. We didn’t help ourselves out defensively and that cost us some runs.
“Mason did a nice job of mixing up speeds and kept them off-balance. But they had several 1-2, 0-2 (count) hits. Our pitching staff needs to do a better job of making sure we’re more careful.”
Kickapoo easily won the junior varsity game 20-2.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to play again Tuesday at Waynesville in another conference game, starting at 4:30 p.m.
