Martin places fourth to pace Bulldog golfers in opener.
Powered by a top-four finish from senior Mark Martin, the Rolla High School boys’ golf team opened its season in impressive fashion, tying for fourth place in the 14-school Columbia Classic, held Monday at A.L. Gustin Golf Course.
Columbia Rock Bridge won the team title with 295 while Rockhurst and Park Hills South tied for second at 310, Rolla and the Columbia Rock Bridge B Team tied for fourth at 330 and Jefferson City High was sixth at 331.
Will Echelmeier of Rock Bridge shot 3-under-par 67 to earn medalist honors while Rock Bridge teammate Jack Knoesel was second at 71, Nick Sobba of Park Hills South third at 73 and Rolla’s Mark Martin fourth at 74.
Also for the Bulldogs senior Jake Drewniak shot 82, sophomore Ben Burris 86, junior Denver Spurgeon 88 and junior Jonah Heitman 98.
The Bulldogs had their season-opener last week rained out, so Monday’s event was their first of the spring.
“Everybody else in the tournament had already played,” said RHS coach Zack Nixon. “For our very first match I thought our guys did a great job.”
The Bulldog golfers are scheduled to host Ozark Conference rival Lebanon today at Oak Meadow Country Club, starting at 4 p.m.
