  • Maries County sheriff’s deputies arrested a St. James man on Wednesday in connection with a burglary at a home near Vichy.
According to reports from the sheriff's office, the suspect was caught in the act by the homeowner and the suspect was held at gunpoint until authorities arrived.
Michael E. Gaither, 49, of St. James, was taken into custody on suspicion of burglary, stealing, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of burglary tools.
Gaither has numerous felony convictions and was currently out on parole.
According to Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman, the sheriff’s office received a 911 call that the landowner saw someone "stealing items from his house" on Highway 68 near Vichy when he returned home. He and a neighbor held Gaither at gunpoint until deputies arrived.
"We located several bags of suspected methamphetamines, drug paraphernalia, prescription pills and burglary tools on Gaither’s person," Heitman said in a statement. "The sheriff’s office recovered suspected stolen items from a residence in St. James. All the stolen property from the residence on Highway 68 was recovered and returned to the rightful owner.
“The suspect is very lucky he wasn’t legally shot in this situation. I am big supporter of the Second Amendment, and with the victim’s help, this career criminal has been brought back to justice,” the sheriff stated.
St. James Police Chief Ron Jones also confirmed Thursday afternoon that Gaither is a suspect in an ongoing investigation in the City of St. James.
