  • The Veterans Memorial Park in Rolla will be getting a flag retirement incinerator thanks for an Eagle Scout project being done.
Ben Meyer, a Life Scout at Troop 85, chartered through St. Patrick's Church in Rolla, received approval to do the project and is coordinating the work with the South Central Regional Veterans Group, several Rolla departments, including the parks department, engineering department, City of Rolla Fire and Rescue and building permits department.
According to a press release from the veterans group, Meyer initially prepared a materials list with the assistance from employees at Lowe's and Meek's. He received a $100 Eagle Scout impact grant through Lowe's to help buy the materials needed.
Excavation work began on March 19, with a 46-by-46-foot hole dug about 25 inches deep. Katie Bohannan and Quincy Powell as well as Troop 85 Scouts Karl and Eric Fahrenholtz, Luke Wallenfang, Johannes Woelk and Brandon Clingenpeel, along with Scout leaders Joe Call, Willis Asberry and Calvin Meyer helped Ben meyer with digging the hole.
Mike Bennish from Bales Construction Company completed final excavation work on March 21, and donated labor and materials for leveling and creation of frame-up forms.
Concrete, which was also donated by Bales Construction Company, was poured on March 24.
Masonry labor will be donated by Ben Meyer’s brother, Bryan Meyer, who was scheduled to start construction of walls on March 30.
Tom Strain of the Rolla Technical Institute will help with welding and fabrication of the metal grate and cover.
