  • It was like a bad April Fool’s joke for the Newburg High School baseball team in the top of the seventh inning on Tuesday.
In a battle of Phelps County rivals, the St. James Tigers broke open a close game with six runs in the seventh frame to pull away with a 9-2 non-league victory over the Newburg Wolves Tuesday at the Newburg High Field.
It was the third straight victory for St. James, now 3-3. Newburg falls to 2-3.
The game was tight for six innings, as St. James plated two runs in the top of the second inning and the Newburg Wolves countered with two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer by Troy Constable.
The Tigers got a run in the fourth to take a 3-2 edge.
However, STJ erupted for six runs in the seventh to pull away.
Wolf starting pitcher Tristan Hoffman started the seventh on the mound but after a two-run home run by St. James’ Nathan Strait was relieved by Dusten Reagan.
Strait was 3-for-3 for St. James while Justin Ray was 3-for-4; Zach Dean had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI; Evan Grayson had a hit and two RBI, and Jesse Hays had a double and scored a run.
Constable and Rigsby each had two hits for the Wolves.
    St. James outhit Newburg 11-8.
Brenn Bartz was the starting and winning pitcher for St. James, allowing seven hits and one walk over five innings while striking out six. Storm DeClue pitched the final two innings for the Tigers.
Newburg was scheduled to play at Owensville in non-league play today, starting at 5 p.m. If that game is postponed by rain, it is to be rescheduled for Friday.
St. James is slated to host Houston on Friday, starting at 4:30 p.m.
