  • NEWBURG - In August of 2013, Scott Russell was unanimously approved by the Newburg Board of Alderman to fill the Ward 1 seat that was vacated by Alderwoman Alyson Garvey who resigned in May of 2013. Garvey had served as an alderwoman since April of 2010.
On Tuesday, April 8, voters will decide who will fill that two-year Ward 1 spot. Russell is seeking re-election to the seat while Susan Howard is challenging him.
Both Russell and Howard responded to questionnaires by The Rolla Daily News in regards to the upcoming election.
    1. Why are you running to serve on the Newburg Board of Aldermen?
Russell: "I am seeking re-election so I may have another chance to serve the community in which I live."
Howard: "I have lived in Newburg for about 14 years. I attended school in Newburg and have a strong feeling of hometown pride. I am dedicated, honest and a friendly person. I currently hold a master’s degree in business administration. I feel that this would help with the decision making and any other functions of an alderwoman."
    2. What do you hope to bring to the board?
Russell: "What I have enjoyed while working on the board is the chance to be involved in helping to make a difference for the people of Newburg and a chance to make decisions to help better the community."
Howard: "Newburg is full of such rich history. I think that it is important to embrace the history of Newburg. I believe that I would be an asset as one of the board members. I feel that a new, fresh person with new, fresh ideas would be good and beneficial for Newburg."
    3. What are some of the issues you feel need to be addressed in Newburg?
Russell: "Some of the issues I would like to see addressed this coming year are improving our city's equipment along with a continuing effort in improving the roads and bridges."
Howard: "I want to see Newburg thrive and grow as I know that it can and embrace its beauty. I want the citizens of Newburg when asked where they live to be able to say with pride, 'I live in the beautiful city of Newburg.' Newburg to me is one big family and I feel as an alderman I can help Newburg. I want to be a part of helping everyone be proud of being from Newburg."
    Unopposed races
Incumbent Mayor James Poucher is not being challenged in the April 8 election. Poucher was the only person to file for the office of Newburg mayor.
Additionally, in Ward 2, Bill Stines, incumbent, will run unopposed to retain his seat.
Aldermen and the mayor serve two-year terms in Newburg.
