  • Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon wants legislators to draft a more "manageable" version of a 700-page bill overhauling the state's criminal laws.
A spokesman for the Democratic governor said there is simply no room for error when it comes to making changes to the criminal code.
The Senate had been debating the bill on the floor this month, but Senate leaders say they will not resume debate until Nixon indicates whether he would support the legislation.
Nixon's office said the governor is encouraging lawmakers to break the measure down into a series of bills, rather than one large package.
The legislation would create new classes of felonies and misdemeanors, and reorganize crimes to fit the new punishment scale.
