  • A Rolla man faces multiple charges, including assault, sodomy and felonious restraint, after police were told he held his wife against her will for about 12 hours earlier this week.
Caleb A. English, 29, has been charged with first-degree domestic assault, a Class B felony; felonious restraint, a Class C felony; two counts of sodomy or attempted sodomy in the first degree; and armed criminal action.
His 41-year-old wife was transported to the hospital for various injuries, according to the Rolla Police Department.
Police responded Wednesday, March 26, at around 5:15 a.m., to a domestic disturbance call in the 100 block of Fairburn Drive in Rolla.
When officers arrived, they found a woman in the front yard, hiding behind a bush, according to court documents.
The woman told officers that her husband, English, was inside the residence “armed with a large machete and a handgun,” court documents state.
The machete and empty handgun magazine were both found in the home, but the firearm was not located, according to police.
English was taken into custody and placed in the Phelps County Jail on a $1 million bond.
According to court documents, the ordeal began Tuesday around 5:30 p.m. when the victim came home to find that English had reportedly been drinking beer.
She asked English to go to the store to buy milk and when he returned, he allegedly grabbed an iPad that the woman was holding and threw the device into a swimming pool in the backyard of the home, according to court documents.
The iPad was later found in a cooking dish filled with rice on top of the stove.
English then allegedly grabbed a glass of milk she was holding, crushed the glass in his hands and then struck her.
From Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, English cut up charging cables to her phone and “bound her arms together just above her wrists” and struck her with various items, including a clothes hanger, belt and metal rod.
When the alleged victim removed her wedding ring, English “retrieved the wedding ring and super glued it back onto her finger,” the records state.
Police also say English threatened to kill the woman and “that she would never be able to leave.”
The alleged victim also stated that English performed sexual acts to the victim.
The woman was told not to come out of the bedroom after the assault stopped, court records state.
Police say after a while, the victim heard English snoring in the next room, and that’s when she allegedly used his cellphone to call a relative and was able to escape from the residence.
When English was questioned by police, he said he and his wife had an argument and that they slept in different rooms before he was awakened Wednesday morning to be taken to jail.
Page 2 of 2 - English has been previously convicted of both a driving while intoxicated misdemeanor offense, a Class B felony, from Phelps County in which he received a suspended imposition of sentence resulting in two years’ probation, and unlawful use of a weapon, a Class D felony, from Crawford County, in which he received a suspended imposition of sentence resulting in three years’ probation.
