  • April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a nationally recognized time dedicated to raising awareness about and promoting prevention of sexual violence.
During April, the Russell House will join with people throughout the state and the nation to focus the public’s attention on this issue.
The Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence statistics for the central region, of which Phelps County is a part of, reports that in 2012 there were 466 individuals that received sexual violence services from available programs through shelters and outreach offices – through both residential or non-residential services.
Statewide there were 4,591 adults, youth and children who received advocacy and support services such as professional therapy, hotline calls, crisis intervention and hospital advocacy.
“No one person can eliminate sexual violence on his or her own,” said Diane Berg, Phelps County Court advocate for the Russell House.
“It takes a community of committed individuals to make a significant impact. The Russell House invites our communities in Rolla, St. James, Edgar Springs, Jerome, Doolittle and Newburg to join me this month, and year-round, in taking a stand against sexual violence,” Berg said.
Local activities to raise awareness of sexual violence include a display of a piece of teal ribbon on the vehicle antennas of local law enforcement agencies as well as courthouse employees, and the display of signage and teal flags in front of the Phelps County Courthouse in Rolla.
