  • With winning a state championship firmly in place as the team’s top goal, losing in the district tournament finals was a bitter pill to swallow for the St. James High School girls’ basketball team.
This week Lady Tiger 5-6 junior guard Ashlee Marlatt got a consolation prize, however.
On Wednesday it was announced that Marlatt was selected to the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association’s (MBCA) Class 3 Girls’ All-State Team.
St. James was ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 most of the season in the Class 3 regular-season state poll. However, the Lady Tigers were stunned by Fatima in the Missouri Class 3 District 9 Tournament championship game, ending their season with a 24-3 mark. St. James also shared the Four Rivers Conference championship with Hermann and Sullivan this season.
“I wish we would have gotten to the state championship but there is always next year, I guess,” Marlatt said. “I’m hoping we can go back to state next year; it’s a great journey and experience to go. And we have everything to accomplish that goal.”
Marlatt, a three-year starter for STJ, had another banner campaign. She averaged 15.6 points, 3.0 steals and set career and single-season records in three-point field goals made. She finished the season with 86 three-pointers.
Lady Tiger head coach Terry Wells is elated that Marlatt was named all-state, but he would have loved to have seen his other star guard, junior Alexis Uffmann, join Marlatt on that squad. There is one more shot for the Lady Tiger guard duo to both make all-state this season, as the Missouri Sportswriters/Sportscasters All-State Team will be selected soon.
“We felt like we probably had a couple of kids deserving,” Wells said. “But you’re going to have a better chance to get multiple kids on if you go farther.”
As good as Marlatt was last season, when she helped the Lady Tigers finish third in the Class 3 State Tournament, Wells said she was even better this season.
“I think the efficiency of her shot was better,” Wells said. “She makes a lot of outside shots and hits for a good percentage; but she gets it off so much quicker now - that is time spent in the gym. I think she could play any guard spot on the floor. She was in a good position with the role she has on our team. She can handle the ball, is smooth and usually defends the other team’s best guard. She has a lot of attributes that helps a team win.”
“I think my shooting for three helps the team out,” Marlatt said. “I had a personal goal to beat the single-season (three-point) record. I try to help out everywhere I can. If Alexis needs help (ball handling) or as a team leader, as a captain.”

Hermann seniors Karinne Lane and Jamie Gleeson joined Marlatt on the Class 3 Girls’ Team. New Haven senior Rachel Steinhoff was on the Class 2 Girls’ Team. Sullivan senior Taylor Lucas and Owensville sophomore Hailey Diestelkamp were on the Class 4 Girls’ Team. And Pacific junior Cullen VanLeer was on the Class 4 Boys’ Team.
