SALEM – The Salem Area Arts Council will host its monthly community acoustic jam at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Southwest Baptist University.
Musicians and listeners of all ages and talents are invited.
Musicians may bring their instruments and play along with the crew, or if you're just a fan, feel free to come and listen.
Genres include bluegrass, country, folk, gospel, modern ballads and oldies.
According to Council Member Libby Sanders, the event began in 2009. Since its inception, the group has grown from "four or five to anywhere from 10-30 musicians and 10-30 listeners."
"We never know who is going to show, but we have a grand time no matter who or what instrument shows up," Sanders said. "Guitar, mandolin, lap dulcimer, bass fiddle, fiddle, banjo, dobro, and harmonica are all regulars, but we also have had a washtub bass, a trumpet, flute, a recorder, and a keyboard, too."
Beginners, intermediate players and professionals are among the many participants, ranging in age from 6 to 86, Sanders said.
There is no cost to attend the event, and musicians from across the region are welcome to attend.
Southwest Baptist University is located at 501 South Grand Street in Salem.
