  • Missouri motorists are being cautioned about price gouging by some tow truck services during winter storms.
Assistant Attorney General Joseph Bindbeutel tells KMIZ-TV it's normal for towing companies to slightly raise their rates during storms to cover employee overtime. But Bindbeutel says winter weather also brings out scammers who take advantage of stranded drivers with undisclosed fees that are tacked on at the end of the service.
Officials also say drivers should be wary of tow trucks operating without licenses from the Missouri Department of Transportation. The license should be visible on every truck.
Bindbeutel recommends asking for a full estimate before being towed, and keeping all receipts and documentation.
