  • Authorities hope an autopsy next week will explain why a 34-year-old Rolla man died at his home on East 14th Street Thursday night.
Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones identified the man as Joseph Howell, but Jones said the cause and manner of Howell’s death are unknown.
An autopsy is scheduled for early next week, he said.
Meanwhile, the Rolla Police Department and the Phelps County coroner’s office, both called to the home Thursday night to investigate, will continue the investigation that began at approximately 10:35 p.m. Thursday.
That’s the time Central Communications received a report that a man in the 700 block of East 14th Street was unconscious and unresponsive.
Central Communications dispatched Rolla police Cpls. Frank Hawkins and Jason Copeland and Patrol Officer Josh Nix to the home where they found the man dead on the kitchen floor.
Detective Robert Jones, of the RPD criminal investigations unit, soon arrived and began his preliminary investigation.
Rolla police are not releasing many details as the investigation continues. What they have divulged is that a woman at the home said she and the man were watching a movie when she fell asleep.
Later, when she awoke, she found him on the kitchen floor, unresponsive and not breathing. She called 911 and began CPR.
Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinfard pronounced Howell dead at 11:15 p.m.
