As the meat of its Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) schedule has arrived, the Missouri S&T men's basketball team faces a pair of road games this week against clubs currently ranked among the top eight in the nation.
The S&T men's and women's squads are to make a swing east this week, taking on Southern Indiana tonight in Evansville, Ind. and then moving on to Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. Saturday.
Tonight the women's game is to begin at 5:15 p.m. with the men's game following at 7:30 p.m.
The Miners are currently 5-6 overall and 0-3 in the GLVC after losing home games last week to Saint Joseph's 94-87 and to No. 16 Indianapolis 86-82.
The task is even tougher this week, as the Miners challenge a Southern Indiana team ranked No. 8 in the latest NCAA Division II national poll and No. 2-ranked Bellarmine.
The Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles come into tonight's game 10-0 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Southern Indiana opened league play over the weekend in the Kansas City area by beating Rockhurst last Friday and William Jewell 88-66 on Sunday.
The Eagles lead the nation in rebounding margin and are fourth in field goal percentage, thanks in 0part to 6-8 senior forward Aaron Nelson. Nelson averages 21.0 points, 13.5 rebounds and has had a double-double in all 10 of the team's games so far this season.
In all Southern Indiana have five players who have a double-figure scoring average, including other starters 6-2 junior Gavin Schumann (11.9), 5-9 senior guard Lawrence Thomas (10.9) and 6-6 senior forward Orlando Rutledge (10.7).
For the Miners 6-4 senior guard Bryce Foster is second in the GLVC in scoring at 21.4 points per game and also averages 7.5 rebounds.
Also for S&T 6-1 senior guard Mudi Eruteya averages 19.7 points and 8.2 boards, 5-10 senior Nusrath Khan 15.4 points, 6-1 freshman guard Danylo Zuikov 9.9 points, 6-5 junior forward Curtis Okafor 8.5 points and 6-1 freshman guard Aaron Emmanuel 8.0 points.
The Lady Miners will attempt to even their overall and league records tonight. S&T is 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the GLVC. It will be a difficult chore, as Southern Indiana comes in 8-2 and 2-0. The Screaming Eagles are 5-0 at home so far this season and have won 17 of their last 20 home games.
S&T snapped a four-game losing skid on Sunday by beating Saint Joseph's at home 79-65. The Screaming Eagles opened league play last weekend by beating Rockhurst 70-44 and William Jewell 84-81.
Southern Indiana leads the GLVC in scoring with a 85.2 average as well as rebounding and three-point field goal shooting.
Page 2 of 2 - Anna Hackert, a 6-1 junior, paces the Screaming Eagles with 20.3 scoring and 8.5 rebounded averages. Also for Southern Indiana 5-6 senior guard Stephanie Carpenter averages 12.7 points.
One of the starters for Southern Indiana is Mary O'Keefe, daughter of Rolla native Dan O'Keefe. Dan O'Keefe is a former standout athlete at Rolla High School.
Mary O'Keefe is a 6-0 junior forward who averages 6.3 points and 6.5 rebounds.
S&T's leading scorer, 5-9 junior guard Mia Wesley (17.1 points), is back with the team for the road trip. Wesley was late returning from the holiday break and did not play in last weekend's games.
Also for the Lady Miners 5-9 senior guard Toni Knar averages 13.6 points, 6-2 senior forward Kylie Cooper 9.9 points and 7.4 rebounds and 5-11 senior Karli Sample 9.8 points and 6.3 boards.
