  • Sales tax receipts in Phelps County down this year

  • Phelps County’s share of sales tax receipts this year was slightly below the total deposited in 2012, but slightly above the amount received in 2011.

  • Phelps County’s share of sales tax receipts this year was slightly below the total deposited in 2012, but slightly above the amount received in 2011.
    According to the most recent sales tax figures from the county treasurer’s office given to county commissioners at their Dec. 12 meeting, the county received a total of $2,475,049.63 in sales tax this year as of the December deposit, compared to $2,496,599.67 received in 2012.
    That’s a negative difference of 0.82 percent.
    The 2013 county budget message written by County Clerk Carol Bennett in January 2013 states that “Due to the continuing tough economic times, the 2013 budget for sales tax revenues reflect a 1% increase over what was received in 2012.
    In 2011, the county received a total of $2,466.587.75 in sales tax.
    The county’s deposit in September 2013 — which was $280,624.87 — was the highest deposit since September 2008, when receipts for that month totaled $281,704.73.
    The previous month — August 2013 — was the month with the lowest deposit, which totaled $149,740.11.
    County sales tax receipts often fluctuate each month depending on when businesses are required to report their sales tax figures. Some report their sales taxes monthly, and others report them on a quarterly basis.
    A breakdown of how much sales tax was collected per month this year compared to the same months in 2012 is below:

    February 2013 — $173,531.22; February 2012 — $139,787.47; positive 24.14 percent difference.
    March 2013 — $ 217,744.26; March 2012 — $249,873.97; negative 12.86 percent difference.
    April 2013 — $214,077.28; April 2012 — $230,671.64; negative 7.19 percent difference.
    May 2013 — $151,248.99; May 2012 — $118,274.38; positive 27.88 percent difference.
    June 2013 — $245,933.63; June 2012 — $279,819.08 negative 12.11 percent difference.
    July 2013 — $236,296.16; July 2012 — $235,289.71; positive 0.43 percent difference.
    August 2013 — $149,740.11; August 2012 — $144,474.09; positive 3.64 percent difference.
    September 2013 — $280,624.87; September 2012 — $250,341.84; positive 12.1 percent difference.
    October 2013 — $ 200,384.30; October 2012 — $213,405.01; negative 6.1 percent difference.
    November 2013 — $188,562.91; November 2012 — $180,793.96; positive 4.3 percent difference.
    December 2013 — $232,179.08; December 2012 — $232,335.90; negative 0.07 percent difference.
    When comparing the months from 2012 and 2013, the reduction for TIF (tax increment financing) payments to the City of Rolla for Kohl’s had not started until May 2012.
