  • Does the Phelps County Emergency Services Board need to participate in the countywide mass notification system?
That was one of the topics addressed Thursday at the emergency service board's monthly meeting.
The group's consensus was "let's wait and see."
The board has that option because the Phelps County prosecutor's and sheriff's offices have offered to use asset forfeiture funds to pay for the first year of a countywide mass notification system.
The forfeiture funds, which are often seized in drug or other criminal cases, following a conviction, would fund only the first year of a mass alert system, including its startup costs.
"I think we have a wonderful situation right here where we can monitor its use through the next six or eight months and then see if we want to use it," said Paula Volkmer, communications chief for Rolla's central dispatch.
    In other business:
•A MOSWIN (Missouri Statewide Wireless Interoperable Network) radio has been ordered for Edgar Springs.
    • The board discussed signing up for a service and maintenance contract for MOSWIN at an annual cost of $2,400.
    • The board continued to talk about contract contents for individual municipalities in the county interested in MOSWIN.
