  • Nominations are currently being accepted from interested people to run for seats on the Phelps County University of Missouri Extension Council, according to Council Chair Vic Schaefferkoetter.
"The Phelps County Extension Council is seeking people from all walks of life who are interested in education and the progress of our community," said Schaefferkoetter. "Serving on the Extension Council is a great way to help make our community a better place for people to live."
Extension Council members represent the broad educational needs and backgrounds of the people of Phelps County.
Candidates must be at least 18 years old and reside in Phelps County and willing to attend meetings, which are held on the second Monday of each month.
Nominations for the Phelps County Extension Council must be made by Friday, Dec. 20.
Council members assist in planning and carrying out Extension educational programs to improve people's lives. As public officials, council members administer a local budget to support education that meets people's highest priorities.
Local programs in Phelps County include parenting classes, youth development, family life, budgeting, financial literacy, 4-H, Master Gardener's program, child care provider classes, starting a business, diabetes management classes and the food nutrition education program held in the schools.
The Extension Council election will take place Jan. 27-31, 2014.
In the past, council members have been elected from three districts in the county — Rolla, East District, West District — but a motion approved by Phelps County Commissioners in late June 2013 reduced the number of districts to two that mirror the county commission districts.
This time, there are two 2-year offices and one 1-year office from each district up for grabs.
This means each district would have five members represented on the council for a total of 10 elected members, a reduction from 11 members.
There are also an additional four appointed members to the council.
Individuals interested in serving on the council may contact the Phelps County Extension Center at 573-458-6260.
