A teenager from Texas County died in a crash on U.S. Highway 63 south of Rolla Friday morning after the vehicle she was in slid off the ice-covered road and overturned.
Charity M. Adams, 16, of Licking, was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m. at the scene by Phelps County Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred 12 miles south of Rolla when a 1992 Ford Taurus driven by Machaira M. Adams, 20, also of Licking, was driving northbound when Machaira lost control on the ice-covered highway. The vehicle went off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail and overturned off the road.
Machaira and another passenger in the vehicle, Abigail H. Adams, 18, of Licking, both suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Phelps County Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
Charity was taken to the Phelps County morgue in Rolla.
All three were wearing seat belts. The crash was reported at 9:35 a.m. There was extensive damage to the vehicle.
This is the 23rd fatal crash in the Troop I area, which covers Phelps and five other counties in south-central Missouri. This is also the first fatal crash reported in December.
