A late rally by the Rolla High School boys' basketball team fell short on Wednesday, as the Bulldogs lost to Marshfield 58-51 in the second round of the Buffalo Tournament.
Weather permitting, RHS will play in the third-place game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Rolla junior varsity team also lost to Marshfield on Wednesday 49-44. The jayvee Bulldogs will play for third place at 5 p.m. Saturday in the jayvee bracket.
In Wednesday's varsity game the Marshfield Blue Jays jumped out to a 20-12 lead and held the advantage the rest of the way.
Rolla trailed 32-26 at halftime and was down 43-36 entering the fourth period.
With around a minute remaining the Bulldogs cut their deficit to one point. However, Marshfield nailed down the victory at the free throw line.
Marshfield, now 2-0, converted 17 free throws compared to just one by Rolla, now 1-2.
"They came out with more energy than we did," said RHS head coach Mark Miller. "And they shot 26 free throws and we shot six."
Kobe Wands, a 5-10 sophomore guard, led Rolla with 17 points while 6-4 junior forward Caleb Copeland had 15 points and 6-2 senior forward Aaron Froehlich 10.
Blayne Armstrong, a 6-4 senior forward, paced Marshfield with 19 points.
In the junior varsity game Marshfield defeated RHS 49-44.
Rolla held the early jayvee lead, taking a 17-12 edge after the first period and going into halftime up 23-19. Marshfield's jayvee squad outscored Rolla 15-9 in the third period to take a 34-32 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Zach Brown had nine points to lead the Rolla jayvees, now 2-1.
