Turnovers, foul woes hurt Tigers in loss to Fatima.
It was a disappointing season-opener for the St. James High School boys' basketball team on Tuesday, as the Tigers were beaten by Fatima 84-77 at Donati Gym.
It was a rematch of last season's Class 3 District 9 Tournament championship game.
Despite losing several players from last season's Missouri Class 3 Final Four squad, Fatima displayed much depth on Tuesday, as five Comets scored in double figures.
The Comets led 19-17 after the first period and then outscored the Tigers 27-26 in the second quarter to take a 46-43 edge into halftime.
St. James, ranked No. 8 in this season's Missouri Basketball Coaches Association's Class 3 preseason state poll, trimmed its deficit to one point entering the fourth period. However, Fatima outscored the Tigers 21-15 in the final quarter to hold on.
Turnovers and early fouls proved to be a problem for the Tigers.
Senior forward Addison Conway and junior guard Logan Courtois each had 22 points to pace St. James while junior guard Elye Rogers added 11.
Junior guard Jared Schulte led a balanced Comets attack with 20 points. Fatima hit 10 three-point baskets.
Fatima also won the junior varsity game 58-57. Trae Tucker scored 21 points for the St. james jayvee squad. Other scoring for the St. James jayvees were Noah Bartle with 16 points, John Walters 11, Tyler Conway six, Breven Brawley two and Luke Bartle one.
The third-seeded Tigers will play sixth-seeded North County at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday in pool play of the Potosi Tournament. St. James will face second-seeded Sullivan at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday in another pool game.
