  • If you think you’d like to invest a lot of hours in education, you might want to think about declaring your candidacy for the Rolla Board of Education.
You have until 5 p.m. Jan. 21, 2014, to think about it and act, for that is the deadline for the April 8, 2014, election.
Don’t get in too big a hurry to file, though. Think about it between now and 8 a.m. Dec. 17, the opening of the filing for candidacy declarations.
Filing is accomplished at the superintendent’s offices, 500-A Forum Drive. Go upstairs to Room 224.
Filing will be open from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on days when school is closed for inclement weather. In addition, filing will not occur from Friday, Dec. 20, through Thursday, Jan. 2; the offices will be closed for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
    Filing resumes at 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014.
“Ballot order on the first day will be determined by a random drawing. After the first day, candidates will be placed on the ballot in order of filing,” according to an announcement from the school district. Three three-year terms will be open. The terms of Tony Froehlich, Jane Haskell and Keith Strassner expire in April.
New board members must attend a 16-hour training session within a year of their swearing-in; they also attend several meetings and conferences throughout the year, serve on multiple committees and have knowledge of, and interest in, the welfare and educational opportunities of students.
Board members must be citizens of the U.S., resident taxpayers in the Rolla district for the year before the election and at least 24 years of age.
Board members can’t be serving a sentence for a felony, must have never pleaded guilty to a felony connected with voting and cannot be a registered sex offender (or required to be). Campaign disclosure reports must be up to date.
