  • Spurred by a 9-0 second-quarter run, the Newburg High School girls' basketball team opened its season with a 56-44 non-conference victory over Mountain View Liberty on Monday.
The Lady Wolves took a 19-14 lead after the first period. However, the Liberty Eagles rallied to take a one-point edge in the second period.
Newburg responded with a three-pointer from freshman guard Riley Guffey followed by three consecutive steals by senior guard Renate Richardson. Richardson converted two of the steals into layups and fed freshman forward Allyssa Dondlinger for a field goal to cap a 9-0 run and the Lady Wolves led the rest of the way.
After scoring just three points in the third period, the Lady Wolves erupted for 22 points in the final period to pull away.
"A lot of kids contributed," said Newburg head coach Steve Guffey. "We made a great run (in the second period). We had poor shot selection and didn't shoot free throws well. But it was a win."
Dondlinger paced Newburg with 16 points and seven rebounds while R. Guffey had 13 points and six assists; junior post Whitney Sands seven rebounds, and Richardson seven steals.
Kylie Acklin and Cassidy Ledgerwood each had 11 points for Liberty.
Seventh-seeded Newburg will play second-seeded Plato at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the first round of the Frisco League Tournament at Laquey High School.
    Individual scoring:
    Newburg (56): Guffey 3-5-13, VanPelt 1-3-5, Richardson 3-3-9, Callahan 0-2-2, Austin 2-1-5, Dondlinger 7-2-16, Friend 0-1-1, Sands 1-3-5.
