  • Secretary of State Jason Kander met with Maj. Gen. Leslie C. Smith and other leaders at Fort Leonard Wood Tuesday to discuss his office's services for current and former members of the military.
Kander, who served for four years in the Missouri National Guard at Fort Leonard Wood after returning from a tour of duty as a military intelligence officer in Afghanistan, also received an update on Fort Leonard Wood's training schools' contributions to the country's overall military readiness.
"Fort Leonard Wood was home to me as a lieutenant and captain in the Army," Kander said. "I'm proud to return here to continue to support the base's mission by ensuring all our servicemen and women have the opportunity to cast their votes and by helping them protect their hard-earned savings from financial fraud."
Kander joined Smith and his senior commandants in the Army and Marine Corps for a command brief in the fort's Maneuver Support Center of Excellence.
Following the meeting, Kander visited the Incident Response Training Department, part of the installation's highly specialized Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear training school. Kander also met with leaders from the Military Police School and engineering regiments.
"Fort Leonard Wood plays a critical role in preparing our troops for combat, patrol and chemical-response operations," Kander said. "The work these men and women do here day in and day out is vital to the strength of our nation's military and an asset to our state."
